CHALLENGE:

We also needed to create an expansion circuit board and various software modules to help our customer turning their prototype into a commercial-grade product.
Having developed a prototype of this device and its appearance design themselves, the customer invited our team to engineer a nice-looking housing for it.
The units assembled in these housing are intended for their enterprise clients and the most valuable contributors from an open-source community they support. That is why it was vital achieving a premium look and feel of the product while optimizing it for the limited production run.

Especially for this project, we have developed and produced an expansion board ("shield") fitting with the mainboard inside the enclosure. It provides power from a rechargeable battery and has a smart card slot with needed interfacing circuitry.

Several enhancements were made to improve the visual appearance of the enclosure, like eliminating the external screws replacing them with slider latches. Laser microperforation is created instead of slit holes to hide indicating LEDs when they are shut down.

Improved appearance and ergonomics

We have applied fine surface treatment to the enclosure for a superior look and touch, including bead blasting for a satin feel and hard anodizing for a wear-resistant deep color.

PRODUCT

Following the customer's provided model, initially made for thermoplastic 3D printing, we have engineered a new housing optimized for CNC machining from aluminum alloy.

Our companies are now working together on the new generation of the product which is smaller, optimized for mass production and has better supply chain reliability.

The expansion board is found to have its own value for the customer's target audience and is currently mass-produced and supplied worldwide.
As asked by the customer, the housings were produced and supplied in two limited production runs featuring various colors and smartcard placement. As they told us, the feedback from their enterprise clients receiving first units is very positive and encouraging.
