CHALLENGE:

We faced several challenges at concept and prototyping stages:

‣ Modem signal is heavily distorted due to multiple reflections in the ionosphere
‣ The first prototype consumes too much for portable applications
‣ Standard IP protocols are unsuitable for the radio link due to the slow direction switching
On the other hand, messaging applications running on smart devices rely on the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections and high data traffic security. From the need to connect these two worlds, the project started.
High-frequency communication in a 3-30 MHz frequency range is an important paradigm offering over-the-horizon or even global links with ionospheric refraction. It has widespread use in emergency communications and to maintain contact with aircrafts or ships.

SOLUTION:

The DSP board is small enough and its form is well suited to integrate inside many newly designed radio transceivers and external modem units.

Integration of the widespread ESP32 Wi-Fi & Bluetooth microcontroller offers an easy way to run radio-optimized data transmission protocols and customer's applications right on the device.

An internal Wi-Fi & Bluetooth chip antenna as a cost-effective solution with plastic enclosures is complemented with an u.fl external antenna connector for more demanding use-cases.

With a peak performance of 3648 MIPS and 2746 MFLOPS, the chosen digital signal processor can execute sophisticated modem algorithms while staying within consumption limits for portable use.

Power-efficient DSP processor

The most important part of the signal processing software is a robust modem featuring data rates from 130 to 9600 bps optimized for challenging conditions of high-frequency radio links.

Robust modem algorithms

As an additional feature, the DSP board allows encrypted digital voice transmissions over the high-frequency channel. It supports bitrates as low as 600 bps for speech and 130 bps for voice mail to withstand the most unfavorable air conditions.

The DSP board is mass-produced in several form factors and modifications adapted for different host platforms and use scenarios. Link quality is confirmed by many independent tests, including various air conditions and intercontinental distances.
This product was developed to satisfy the needs of several of our customers in a flexible platform for modern messaging applications basing on high-frequency communications.
