A SYMBIOSIS OF

CHALLENGE:

We faced several challenges during the concept stage:

‣ Integrating a powerful DSP processor in a tiny device
‣ Making a pleasant-looking design combined with low-volume manufacturing and reasonable unit cost
‣ Creating modern UX without a custom shaped screen, falling outside the budget
In addition, the customer has set high standards on the look and everyday use comfort because the product is targeted to a premium market segment.
This project started from a customer's need to have a special media device that, besides the traditional functions, can record and process the speech applying their proprietary algorithms.

SOLUTION:

The enclosure design is inspired by modern smartphones; however, the thickness is higher because of the high-capacity battery needed to supply a power-hungry processor. The thick profile is compensated with a narrow face to make the device more comfortable to hold.

Contemporary design

The monochrome display is of OLED type, with its brightness adjusted with a sensor for additional comfort in various lighting conditions.

The full-glass front surface hides LED-backlit touch sensors with a response on-pair with the best capacitive touch screens.

Touch control

The chosen 32-bit digital signal processor from Texas Instruments, with a peak performance of 3648 MIPS and 2746 MFLOPS, has enough computing power to execute the customer’s algorithm in real-time.

Powerful DSP processor

To provide enough power to the DSP, we picked a high-capacity 2300 mAh Li-Ion battery occupying most of the internal space. Also the power management circuits were highly optimized to achieve over 90% efficiency.

For reliable operation in outdoor conditions, we added adequate protection against dirt particles and moisture at IP67-level.

We produced and supplied two fully assembled engineering samples and six additional circuit board sets, which the customer has accepted and appreciated us for our commitment to quality work.
With its simple forms and minimum of parts, the enclosure is well suited for CNC machining, allowing the product to be easily manufactured in small volumes without investing in expensive mold.
